External USB to serial expansion for POS terminal in petrol stations

Overview

Point of Sale (POS) terminals in a typical petrol station application allows customers to pay for their petrol at the front counter in the station's convenience store. The station’s peripheral devices, such as credit card readers, receipt printers, and cash registers, are each connected to a separate serial port. POS terminals often integrated to a PC with multiport serial boards to control multiple peripheral devices.

A petrol pump manufacturer in Europe was looking for a reliable and easy to install solution since peripheral devices can be difficult to maintain and costly to service. As a shoebox PC was used, limited space was a consideration for this petrol station POS application.

Solution

Moxa UPort 1650-8, USB to serial converter was used for this application. Its USB plug and play capability makes serial port expansion easy. Unlike multiport serial boards, the UPort 1650-8 does not require users to open the chassis or turn off the system in order to add COM ports or maintain the device, saving time, money and effort.

MOXA UPort 1650-8 also allowed users to connect the peripheral devices in the POS terminal and overcomes the space and PCI slot limitations. The solution resulted in significant cost savings and greater scalability.
