Overview

A reliable and intelligent network is a key success factor for modern substation automation. Substations that transmit and distribute electric power over expansive territories are often located out of doors in areas subjected to high electromagnetic interference and extreme temperature conditions. The substation infrastructure must be capable of providing EMI protection, network redundancy, great reliability, and flexible deployment options for future upgrades.

In addition to reliability, coordination between the many standards and proprietary protocols used in substations is also a major requirement in developing power automation systems. As a standard communication protocol between different intelligent electronic devices (IEDs), Ethernet-based IEC 61850 communication standards can be deployed for better extensibility and interoperability.

Solution

TNS recommends MOXA PowerTrans Series Ethernet switches. Designed for industrial applications it offers flexible, modular configuration with up to 22 fiber optic ports (18+4G ports) for long-haul transmission and scalable gigabit bandwidth. It is IEC 61850-3 and IEEE 1613 certified for best EMI shielding and error free communication.

PowerTrans switches also supports Layer 3 routing capability and IP routing protocols for complex automation networks. With Turbo Ring media redundancy feature, network recovery is less than 20 ms at 250 switches.

PowerTrans switches are also designed to withstand -40 to 75°C operating temperature range. The wide temperature requirement is important as some substation may experience wide variation in temperatures. This wide temperature requirement is satisfied with an efficient heat dissipation design for extremely hot surroundings and an intelligent self-warming system that activates when temperature drops to extremely cold temperatures.
