| Speed Detection System |
OverviewThe exponential growth of road traffic in recent years has put undue pressure on the ability of Governments in countries around the world to provide safe roadways for their citizens. As a result, there has been an increased focus on road safety, with improvements in the enforcement of traffic laws taking center stage. This Europe-based producer of digital and analog traffic enforcement equipment introduced here is a leader in the industry. The core business of the company involves the development, production, and installation of both traditional and digital stoplight camera systems and radar systems. The speed detection system built by this provider integrates four main devices: the detector, an industrial video encoder, an FTP server and a workstation for video file format conversion. The industrial video encoder is connected to the speeding detector through a coaxial cable and is linked up with the FTP server through a twisted pair copper wire. On the other side, the FTP server connects to a remote workstation located at the regional police station through an xDSL service. SolutionMoxa’s VPort 351-T industrial video encoder was chosen by the system developer to build their solution. When a speeder is detected, the VPort 351-T event recording function will be triggered by the detector. The VPort 351T then begin transmitting video images (from four seconds before to four seconds after the event took place) to the FTP server. In order to speed up data transmission, the trigger is sent using UDP (User Datagram Protocol), with event number and time stamp marked for convenient tracking. The officers at the police station use the workstation to download the recorded video files from the FTP server and convert them from .pes to the required .avi format on a regular basis. The wide operating temperature of the VPort 351-T makes it the right choice for outdoor roadside environments. Moreover, Moxa provides software customization that makes the best use of the built-in pre- and post-event recording function, allowing the speed detection system to record three speeders in sequence without stopping, to provide sufficient evidence to verify speeding offences. The efficiency of traffic enforcement is greatly enhanced by installing a speed detection system integrated with Moxa’s VPort 351-T video encoder.
