Traffic planners are continually studying better ways of managing traffic flow and reducing congestion within exisiting infrastructures. Currently, video surveillance cameras are widely used as an effective tool to allow administrators to access real-time information for isntant traffic control and management. Traditional traffic control systems use serial lines and modems for establishing communication lines between outdoor devices and the operation center. However, the modern Intelligent Transport System (ITS) needs a higher bandwith to transmit high-resolution video data over a distance of hundreds of miles to a control center. Reliability and redundancy are also high priorities in today's traffic systems, since tranffic accidents caused by natural or man-made problems can occur without warnings. Due to Ethernet's reliability features, high bandwidth, and the low cost of components, Ethernet is being used more and more as the preferred protocol to construct reliable and well-managed communications networks that ensure no data loss and continuous operation.
